It helps to tell people you have moved!
I now call wordpress home. New blog can be found here. I am not porting the old blog over so this one will still stay 'active'. :)Beccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00708825379018408204noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2724020924380046366.post-33617366518961345212011-09-02T14:51:00.000-05:002011-09-02T14:51:22.972-05:00Such a happy girlOur Emma is one happy child, it took an army doing a ton of crazy crap to make Jacob smile. In fact, the first thing that boy smiled at was me humming the death march...
She smiles so big that her whole body wiggles because of it. Jonathan and I have dubbed her tongue smile a lizard smile for obvious reasons. If the pointy tongue wasn't so cute it might be considered a little creepy.

It appears that licking the plate has messy consequences.
I knew I would love it the moment I took it. All the guests had left and it was just the four of us. Jonathan and I were cleaning up the house and, in his exhausted/partied out state, Jacob gathered up all his balloons and his favorite blanket and laid down to watch his favorite movie.

Simple.
For now here is a picture of Lady. She is getting so big!
I knew she needed a bottle so I went to prepare her one before I got her up from her crib.

On the monitor I hear the door knob rattling. I knew it was Jake trying out his new skills by entering Emma's room. Since she was up anyway I thought it was no big deal and continued to make her bottle.

I had just finished preparing her bottle when I heard a delightful squeal escape from both Emma and Jacob. I run in there to see what it was all about and Jacob had climbed up into Emma's crib with her blankies and was laying with her keeping her company.

When I came in he popped up and said o'night (which is toddler for goodnight) and waved bye to me. It was quite adorable while at the same time being a little disconcerting, haha.

He got his bear all strapped into the booster chair and went to the drawer for a spoon and to the cabinet for a bowl. He had such an earnest face as he started feeding his little bear buddy.

Unfortunately, he got bored feeding the bear very quickly but it was cute while it lasted.
Yes, that's right, the love affair that I am talking about is between legos and my husband. Before Jake was even born Jonathan was talking about how much fun they would have playing legos together. He would walk up and down the aisles and drool over which sets they would own and reminisce about the legos he had and the ones he always wanted but could never afford. We bought Jakes first set of legos for Christmas this year and when he first opened them he couldn't care less about them. I could see Jonathan deflate a little as he mumbled hopefully that maybe he was just too young for them. I assured him that was the case and I put them up in his closet for a few months. When we moved to the new house I dug them back out and he took right to them. Now they are one of his favorite toys. Needless to say I am relieved and both husband and son are happy as larks.
This is one of the pictures I took when trying to get her 1 month old snapshot. She looks like she wants to strangle me, haha.
By the way, I made the hat she is wearing. Well in my defense she is pretty boring at this age. You have your choice of pictures of her pooping, eating, screaming, sleeping, or scowling. However, to appease the masses (again ie my mother, haha) here she is in all her scowly glory.

"Jacob don't drive the ambulance on your sisters head."
"Why are you eating your snack in the dryer?"
"Did you drop your monkey in the toilet?"
"Jacob! Did you put the phone in the dishwasher?"
"Please don't sit in the broiler."

And here is a snippet of what my day looked like:

I hear the phone ring but can't find it. Eventually I locate it in the dishwasher...
I hear Jacob yelling from the laundry room. I walk in to find him in the dryer with his stuffed monkey eating his mid morning snack. I get him out and go tend to Emma who is fussing in her boppy.
I hear the answering machine playing back all old messages. I go into the bedroom and find that he has climbed up on a chair and then on to the desk and is standing on top of the desk pushing the buttons on the answering machine. I get him down and go feed Emma her mid morning bottle.
I hear Jacob yelling from the kitchen. I walk in to find him sitting in the broiler. I get him out and go tend to Emma who is fussing in her swing.
Emma, Jacob and I are in the laundry room trying to fold clothes. Suddenly Jacob runs out giggling. I finish folding the clothes and find him in his room with my bra on...crazy kid. I take the bra off (after pictures, haha) and go tend to Emma who...you guessed it...is fussing in her boppy seat.
I hear the pantry door open and paper crinkling. I go into the kitchen and peak into the pantry and there Jacob stands with a chocolate chip cookie in each hand and chocolate all over his face. He looks at me and say's 'gookie' and grins. I am a bad momma and lets him finish one of the cookies (I eat the other one).
I go feed Emma her afternoon bottle.
I hear water splashing around in the bathroom and Jacob saying uh-oh (NEVER a good sound) I walk in the bathroom and there is his monkey sitting in the toilet.

I am done, it's nap time for all the kids! Here's hoping to a better afternoon. I did get 7 loads of laundry finished at least.

As the weather warms and spring looms near Jacob has discovered that snacks taste much better outside and so he has spent many afternoons out on the back porch with a bowl full of goldfish crackers and a sippy cup full of water. He likes to sit on the low brick surround and babble nonsense words as he nibbles on his snack.

He has also discovered a feeling of imminence happiness at his freedom to go in and out as he pleases and often favors me with huge grins that make his eyes crinkle up.

Most of the time the door being open leads him to take me by the hand and pull me out the door. He loves to walk around the yard hand in hand and pointing to different things asking 'that?'.

Pictures taken by my mother-in-law.

Now for the written story.

February 18th:

It began around 9:00 on a Friday night. I started having slightly painful cramps in my back that came and went in waves. It occurred to me that it could be labor pains but since it was in my back I wasn't sure.

I ended up loosing a lot of what I thought was my mucus plug about 30 minutes after the pains started.

I sat in the dark at my computer and timed them trying to find a pattern to confirm that it was indeed labor but they were all over the place ranging from 8 to 15 minutes apart and lasting 30-45 seconds. Around midnight I was finally able to get some sleep as fitful as it was.

February 19th:

At 5am the next morning I woke up with the same pains running through my back and a sudden fear that I didn't have enough hats for the baby and the need to rectify that as soon as possible. So I set to work crocheting hats.

Jacob woke up late that morning so I was the only one awake for about 3 hours. During this time I timed my back pain (still not sure if they were really contractions or not) and they were still 5-12 minutes apart lasting 30-55 seconds. No real pattern to them at all.

When Jonathan woke up at around 8 I told him I think I am having back labor but was unsure. He became antsy and excited at the knowledge and called both our moms. When I talked to my mom I told her it was probably nothing but Jonathan and her both just knew I was having a baby today!

Because Jacobs birth was such a surprise I didn't get a chance to eat before induction with him so I was very hungry during labor. I wasn't going to let that happen again, so if this was the real thing I was going to eat. I told Jonathan I wanted enchiritos from Taco Bell for lunch. So we both got ready and then got Jacob ready and headed out for lunch. We ended up going to Taco Bueno instead and got our food to go and went to the park to eat it because it was such a nice day. After we ate we let Jacob play on the park toys for a few minutes. It was a lovely outing.

After that I told Jonathan to go and get a haircut while I put Jacob down for his nap. The whole time he was gone I continued to have the back pains.

At 1:30 I left for my shower that my best friend so graciously hosted for me. It was a small gathering but lots of fun. During the shower it felt like the pains were getting farther apart (though I wasn't sure because I had nothing to time them with) but more painful.

Towards the end of the shower I was urged to call the doctor on call and ask if I should go in to labor and delivery to get checked out. When he called me back I explained to him what had been happening and he told me that it was unlikely that I would be in labor this early. He told me to drink water and see if the pains got closer together and more painful. I felt a little disappointed and slightly embarrassed for even calling. When I told everyone what the doctor had said they were angry and claimed him to be stupid.

We left the shower around 4:30 and headed home. When I got back to our house I realized I had left my purse at Laurens and so we had to go all the way back and get it. It was on our way back to Laurens house that I thought I might actually need to go to labor and delivery anyway. I told Jonathan that after we put down Jacob for the night we should go and get me checked out.

By the time Jacob was down and we were getting ready to leave I started having doubts about going. I didn't want to be that crazy lady that thought she was in labor but really wasn't. Jonathan insisted that I go so I called the hospital and let them know I was on my way.

We got there a little after 8. I got checked into triage and hooked up to all the little monitors. Sure enough the back pain was real contractions. So my nurse prepared to do an internal on me. She asked what my last internal had shown and I told her 2cm and 60% effaced. As she did the internal the look on her face was priceless. She actually looked shocked. I asked her if I was still 2 and 60 and she slowly said no and felt around a bit more. She said I was 5 and 80. I asked what that meant and she said 'it means you are staying and having a baby tonight'.

As we get me settled into an actual labor room I come to find out that because I sounded so chipper on the phone with them that I wouldn't be in labor at all. Everyone said I was in such good spirits to be so far along and having back labor.

As I got settled into the room they hooked me up to my antibiotics and such. I was very pleased that it only took one stick to get my IV in (although she did have to chase down the vein) as it usually takes no less than 3.

I really wanted to try to go with out an epi this time since the last one I got was placed too high and I couldn't breath well. It also left me with back pain. As it turns out back labor is a hard thing to go through and I ended up breaking down at 7 cm (almost 11pm) and getting one. It was much better this time except for the fact that the anesthesiologist had to poke me 3 times to get it placed right. It hurt bad all three times.

My water broke on it own around midnight.

A little before 2 I was ready to push, however my doctor wasn't there. He was still driving to the hospital. So I got to do baby pushes (just enough to relieve the pressure) for about 30 minutes. When the doctor arrived things went fast. They broke the bed down and had me in pushing position in a matter of minutes. 4 contractions later my baby girl was born into this world. It was just as amazing as when Jacob was born. I held my breath as she took her first. They placed her in my arms and she was beautiful. Born at 3:03 am on February 20th, weighing 7lbs 11oz and 19 inches long, my Emma Olivia.

That whole night I got to be with her. We did all the normal things that we didn't get to do with Jacob because he was premature. Jonathan got to help with the first bath. I got to hold her when I was taken to my room. It was bliss.

It didn't last.

She showed distress and signs of infection on the second day and she was taken to NICU for a 7 day stay. It's our luck I guess and a big reason we are not having any more children.

However her birth was as perfect as I could ask for.Beccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00708825379018408204noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2724020924380046366.post-77045329793485451352011-03-14T14:02:00.000-05:002011-03-14T14:02:19.955-05:00Big Shoes To FillLately Jacob has taken to walking around in his daddy's shoes. Well, it's less like walking and more like shuffle, shuffle, fall...get back in them...shuffle, shuffle, fall...and repeat. Haha.
He wants to be just like his daddy, shoes and all!

I really wanted to get some good newborn pictures of Emma. Due to the NICU I wasn't able to with Jacob and I thought I wouldn't be able to this time wither Emma, however, she was discharged right in time and so yesterday I set out to accomplish this feat.

And what a feat it was! She wouldn't eat, she wouldn't sleep, she was gassy, and poopy, she didn't want her limbs messed with nor did she want anything to do with any soothing.

She's a spirited one she is.

Here is my attempt. I will try to get more in the next couple of days but I am sure that it will be as big of a fail as this one was.

She is precious though. :) I'm quite smitten.
