Jacob had his 18 month appointment on Monday and it's been a rough week since.

He reacted poorly to the shots and he was really stiff and sore for the first couple of days and he ran a fever for a little over 48 hours.

He is teething at least 2 molars and an incisor and so he is in pain and not sleeping.

And to top it all off I have pregnancy induced insomnia so as soon as he wakes up at 12, 1, 2 or whatever in the morning I am up for at least 2-3 hours.

Needless to say, I am exhausted and a little bit cranky and my house is a disaster.

However, all that disappears and you forget the trials of parenthood when your usually very independent child finds comfort and relief in your arms. It's the best feeling in the world.

So here is a poem to help me remember.

The Cleaning and Scrubbing Will Wait...

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
hang out the washing and butter the bread,
sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
and out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
but I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren't her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
for children grow up, as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

  1. Every time I read that poem I tear up. Poor things, both of you guys. I hope everyone is feeling better soon, and getting much needed sleep.

  2. I'm so sorry he isn't feeling well. This picture melts my heart. Being a mommy is the best thing in the world.

  3. Beautiful photo and poem -- I had never read that poem before and it speaks to me...hope your baby is all better now...
